Shyness grows uglier with age;
she dresses differently,
more confident and
with clearer intention.
She whispers lies to me:
convincing me she is now
the virtue, not the vice.
I'm afraid to stop her any
longer: she speaks for me
like a mother for a child.
She's convinced me the
world beyond her arms
is not safe. But when
we're alone, she tells me
how very much she hates
the essence of who I am.
